Cottage garden plants for British borders

Cottage gardens look effortless because they're forgiving. Pick a few reliable perennials, let them mingle, and the bees will move in.

Start with the workhorses

Hardy geraniums, salvia 'Caradonna', alchemilla mollis and lavender will carry a border for years.

Mix heights

Tall foxgloves and verbena at the back, mid-height salvia in the middle, low geraniums at the front.

Leave seed heads

They feed birds in winter and look beautiful with a hard frost on them.
